I've been resisting reporting on my lessons with Charlie. I'm afraid of him getting popular so I can't schedule more lessons!
Charlie's hour long Skype sessions are a flat out bargain. It's so easy to schedule and pay them online. You can schedule them whenever you are ready for another. Just book one and you'll understand first hand why I am so grateful to have connected with him. I could tell you how effectively he uses the hour, what a great mentor he is, how patient and persistent he is when I can't "get" something, and how totally good a human he is, but if you're unwilling to risk a pittance ($45), you will never know what you missed.
Highly recommended! (now I hope his schedule doesn't fill up and ruin this good thing I enjoy!)
Just had my first Lesson with Charlie and am already looking forward to the next. His style of teaching and patience is excellent, plus the exercises seem to be much more useful than others I have received.
I'm struggling with fundamental embouchure issues so Charlie's excellent technical understanding, insight and ability to communicate principles and ideas has been very helpful. He spends the time to explain, demonstrate and use whatever imagery is necessary to convey ideas and sensations that are critical to an efficient playing mechanism. Great player AND teacher.
Charlie Porter was very professional and patient with his instruction. His techniques are on target and exactly what I needed. If you are on the edge about taking a lessson, try it, It might be just what you are looking for.
Very enlightening and, at the same time, simple lesson! Charlie helped me in better understanding how the trumpet in itself is just a simple and natural instrument aimed at supporting the sound produced by the player. Beyond the potential technical result, on which I will base my daily practice, this geometry make a lot of sense also from a creativity and artistic perspective. Thanks. Pippo (Italy)
Charlie is a good listener, and good communicator. He builds on fundamentals, pointing out check points and guidelines for self-audit. His style is easy going, patient, and focused on the student, besides being a generally all around nice guy.
I had my first trumpet lesson today with Charlie and I think he is fantastic. He is just like he is in his Youtube tutorials very thorough and engaging and I hope to continue having lessons for a long time.
Thanks Charley for a great lesson! I got my first impression on basis of your youtube videos and the lesson only strenghtened the feeling. You have a great combination of playing skills, teaching skills and the too rare willingness to share.
I just had my first lesson with Charlie. As a beginning trumpet player, I had no idea that I was developing bad habits. Charlie could see right away what I was doing wrong, and showed me not only how to play in a more efficient manner, but also gave an extremely in depth explanation of the physics behind getting a good tone. You can tell by the way he teaches that he really takes the time to ensure that his students are fully internalizing the lesson materiel to enhance their own development as trumpet players. Highly recommended.
Well...what can I say. I am 63 yrs. old and have been playing a long time and in a short amount of time Charlie was able to analyze my situation correctly and explain embouchure and aperture clearer than anyone else has. I plan to take many more lessons from Charlie going forward.
I stopped playing my horn in college after serious embouchure issues. its been 20 years. I had my first starting over lesson today and it was fantastic. I found Charlie on youtube when I searched for embouchure fix videos. I felt Charlie's videos were teaching fresh new and practical concepts. My first lesson with Charlie has pointed me in the right direction on resetting my embouchure. Cant wait for the next lesson so that I can further my desire to play my horn for pure enjoyment and worship.
I had gone through tons of trumpet instructions on YouTube...but nothing struck home like Chariie's videos....and the first lesson was a total eye opener since you get instruction 1-on-1. The first lesson on embouchure setting was like an epiphany...and i could get note on the trumpet with extreme ease and with the least amount of effort...Charlie is a wonderful musician as well as a very honest and competent teacher. Rarely looks at the clock whist teaching...except of course if there's another lesson scheduled to other students.....I have already booked my self a pack of 4 classes and now looking forward to the next class....I am certain he will guide me to the musical goals that i have set for myself.....
Lessons with Charlie are well worth it. He seems to care more then most teachers and he really puts the effort in to make suer you learn as much as possible in a short period of time. Quality Stuff. Don't hesitate. Book lesson with Charlie Now!
I would like to say, not only a big thank you to Charlie Porter but also recommend him to other budding trumpeters. His introductory lesson was outstanding in terms of explaining clearly the reasons for a correct embouchure. He was prepared to spend lots of time on my embouchure and demonstrate facially, exactly the muscles in play as one blows aah eeh aah in a mouthpiece. He is searching in student's responses, very objective in his response and detailed with superb analogies in his answer. Before this Skype lesson, I was fully aware of his excellent utubes on 3 C's, straight line connectivity and embouchure. At 75 years of age I wanted to meet this genius when I was alive and still able to raise my ability from grade 3 ABRSM in England. Thank you Charlie; great to meet you. Thank you for wonderful tips e.g. Clarke etudes and lots of others, including Arban which I use. In 1.5 hours, this great trumpeter has raised my hopes for significant improvement and he has given me the encouragement and tools to do the job. If you love trumpet music (classical, church and popular) like me, then get in touch with this great man. You will not be disappointed for he is every bit as wonderful as his utubes, very much alive and a great teacher; in my view, one of the greatest; thank you Charlie.
First lesson since graduating with a degree in jazz - should really have done it much sooner. Loads of really useful information building on Charlie's Youtube videos and invaluable to have it explained in person and tailored to my needs.
I have become a better trumpet player over the past year. He helps me with the fundamentals that I never learned elsewhere or on my own. He has helped me with timing, intervals, chords, improvisation, building my range etc. He also is willing to work on my current music challenges as well as provide me with new exercises and ways to approach my practices and make the best of limited practice time. I love his wealth of music knowledge and down-to-earth explanations that helps me practice better, smarter and continually improve. Everything that he has taught me has helped me to become a better trumpet player and my fellow band members have also noticed. I have personally recommended him to a fellow trumpeter and sax player. He's extremely generous with his time and knowledge. He's the best !!!
Great lesson, thanks for your patience with me and all the useful technical approaches for improvisation the phrasing stuff and embouchure analysis. I'm fired up for another few weeks. Love the friendly feel to the lesson. Really feel this helps enormously.
I have had 3 lessons with Charlie now and I have already felt my trumpet come to life! Charlie gives very good advice on how to help teach yourself to improve and is definitely a master trumpeter. It feels like I am learning from a good friend.
Thanks Charlie for your passion for music and specifically the trumpet. Thanks for inspiring me. I had taken a 16 year break from the trumpet and now I feel like I am an even stronger player after just 6 months back.
I live in Sweden and do lessons online with Charlie and he comes highly recommended.
What a great horn player to have available for lessons and inspirations. I'd say that Charlie has got me playing better and better in the quickest amount of time. He has a broad and thorough knowledge of the horn, from classical to improv. I highly recommend him for a Skype lesson. Even over my ancient computer he can hear the fine details of my tone and see the slightest movements of my chops. His advice and direction has accelerated my skill level. I think you too will find his advice and instruction more than just helpful.
